Summer 2014

Where are we going?

Where ever and when ever we travel we must have an objective, a reason for going. We find that unless we have that specific purpose we don’t enjoy the process quite as much.

The first objective of the summer 2014 trip is to qualify for membership of The Order of Bluenosed Caravanners, to do which you must take your caravan north of the Arctic Circle, an imaginary circle round the earth, parallel to the equator, at latitude 66° 32′ N; it marks the northernmost point at which the sun appears above the level of the horizon on the winter solstice. The second objective is to visit North Cape which is often, mistakenly, referred to as the most northerly point in mainland Europe. North Cape is actually on the island of Magerøya which is connected to the mainland by a tunnel which is nearly 7 km (4.4ml) long.

Cape Nordkinn is actually the most northerly point in Europe but has not been developed as a tourist attraction and (according to Wikipedia) is a two day round trip on shanks’s pony from Mehamn, and in poor weather can be navigated only by GPS - so North Cape it is then.

The refurbishing of the house has to be completed before we go but we have booked a ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark on 8th June giving us  five and a half weeks to complete everything we need to do in UK and then  seventeen weeks to complete the 4000 plus mile journey before we have to be back in UK around the end of September or early October.
