This church, Vor Frelsera Kirke, (Our Saviours Church) is most famous for its extraordinary spire, completed in 1752 and accessible via a spiral staircase that runs around the exterior. I climbed to the top of the 400 steps on my last visit (well I was younger and fitter) and found the panoramic views over to city to be quite spectacular.

On my last visit I was told by a tour guide that the architect Lauritz de Thurah on finding the staircase wound the “wrong”way committed suicide by leaping from the top. The truth is the architect died in his own bed poor and destitute seven years after completion. The truth did not stop Danish film director Nils Vest making a film about the story.
