The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid, easily Denmark’s most famous statue, sits on her rock looking at the passing ships wishing she were human. It was commissioned by Carlsberg brewery head Carl Jacobsen and sculpted in bronze by Edvard Eicssen (1876 - 1959) it was placed at the end of the harbour promenade in 1913. The statue has fallen victim to vandals on a number of occasions. In 1961 she had her hair painted red and in 1964 her head was cut off, after which both arms were removed and in 1998 she lost her head for a second time. Moving her slightly further out to sea seems to have prevented further incidents.
